What must be true of the recovery/recycling equipment itself, in order for its use to satisfy Section 608 recovery requirements?
Not quite. The answer is A: It must be certified as meeting AHRI (formerly ARI) Standard 740's recovery efficiency performance requirements
The technician's personal certification is only half of the compliance picture — the recovery equipment itself has to be independently certified to a recognized performance standard (AHRI/ARI 740) demonstrating it can actually achieve the recovery efficiency the regulations assume. A certified technician using uncertified, improvised equipment cannot reliably reach or verify the required recovery levels, which defeats the purpose of having a technician-certification requirement in the first place.
Read the eCFR text current through 2026-10-30 of § 82.154. § 82.154(b)(2) requires equipment certified for the refrigerant and appliance type; § 82.158(d)(3) requires equipment made on/after 1/1/2017 to be certified by an approved testing organization to AHRI Standard 740-2016.
