What is the regulatory definition of a Type I 'small appliance'?
Not quite. The answer is A: Equipment that is manufactured, charged, and hermetically sealed in a factory, containing 5 pounds or less of refrigerant
The Type I definition hinges on two things together: the appliance was sealed at the factory (not field-charged and field-sealed) and it holds 5 pounds or less of refrigerant. Both conditions matter — a field-assembled system with a small charge doesn't automatically qualify as Type I just because of its low refrigerant weight if it wasn't factory-sealed.
